The volume is first state, with "The war!" repeated on p.173. The letter is on Mencken's letterhead. He expresses regret to poet George Sterling about being unable to use one of his pieces for a project. He goes on to voice his thoughts on the murder trail of actor Fatty Arbuckle, and author Upton Sinclair: "My guess is that Arbuckle gets off with a very light sentence. Here in the East the jury would acquit him. The swinish effort of the district attorny [sic] to raise up prejudice against him deserves the attention of the Ku Klux Klan. Sinclair is fan-toddish. Socialism is bad medicine. " Lot Amendments Condition: Volume with some light soiling and rubbing to extremities, corner tips worn; envelope and letter with toning, original folds; very good.
