A JEWELLED VARI-COLOURED GOLD-MOUNTED AND ENAMELLED EGG ON PLINTH, INCORPORATING A CLOCK AND AN AUTOMATON

A JEWELLED VARI-COLOURED GOLD-MOUNTED AND ENAMELLED EGG ON PLINTH, INCORPORATING A CLOCK AND AN AUTOMATON by Karl Fabergé, workmaster Michael Perchin, St. Petersburg, dated 1902 The ovoid silver body overall enamelled in translucent pink over guilloché moiré ground, the front with a circular white enamel clock face with blue Arabic chapters, a blue minute ring and gilt stylized leaf and swag decoration and gilt scroll openwork hands, the glass face within seed-pearl set bezel with a pillar catch and hinge mounted with four pearls, the body divided by a central band of mounted seed-pearls with gold engraved stiff-leaf berried rims, the reverse with a circular hinged panel of openwork roundels of laurel and geometric motifs concealing the clock mechanism, with two winding apertures below (lacking the hinged covers). The top of the Egg surmounted by a similar hinged foliate openwork panel surrounded by a foliate band suspending eight seed-pearl set ribbon-tied foliate garlands and drops, the panel revealing a polychrome translucent enamel rose-diamond set gold cockerel automaton with hinged neck and wings, in shaded green, red and yellow, on an openwork circular elevating stand above the brass and steel mechanism, with two further apertures for operating the mechanism. The base of the egg applied with an engraved gold stiff-leaf openwork calyx, the shaped stem of pink translucent enamel with an oyster enamel and gold twisted ropework band above four gold engraved foliate sprays with a ribbon-tied stiff-leaf wreath below and further enclosed by a double stiff-leaf band, on a shaped square plinth, the concave faces with translucent pink guilloché reserves applied with gold amatory, floral and musical trophies, enclosed by a translucent oyster border, the angles applied with gold stiff-leaf scrolls suspending foliate drops, a gold ribbon-tied berried foliate garland at the foot, the whole between shaped borders applied with rosette and stiff-leaf motifs, on compressed circular feet, the base engraved and dated 'K. Fabergé 1902' the mounts stamped 'Fabergé' in Cyrillic, workmaster's initials of Mikhail Perkhin [Perchin], assayed 56 for St. Petersburg, 1899-1908 the silver body marked under the enamel 'Fabergé' in Cyrillic, assayed 88 for St. Petersburg, 1899-1908 10 5/8 in. (27 cm.) high, closed 12¼ in. (31 cm.) high, with bird raised the plinth 4½ in. (11.5 cm.) wide total gross weight 3,645 gr.
