BY ABU BAKR HARAWI, NORTH EAST IRAN, 12/13TH CENTURY
A KHORASSAN COPPER INLAID BRONZE BUCKET BY ABU BAKR HARAWI, NORTH EAST IRAN, 12/13TH CENTURY Of spherical form rising from short spreading foot, with triangular section rim and two raised lugs linking the curved handle, the body engraved and inlaid with a central band of finely drawn seated figures within copper-inlaid roundels which interlock with alternate minor roundels around which are engraved four harpies, a band above of engraved scrolling vine and copper-inlaid inscription broken by four bird roundels, the inscription in naskh but for one of the panels done in kufic which contains the signature, below the figural band and around the foot, a minor band of kufic inscription alternated with roundels, the lip similarly decorated, foot a later replacement from a contemporaneous bucket, small areas of damage and red surface patination 7 1/8in. (18.1cm.) diam.
