A KODANSU [SMALL CABINET] Edo Period (18th century) Of standard rectangular form, the exterior and door decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e, tsukegaki , tin and gold heidatsu and details in red and black lacquer on a nashiji ground, depicting karako [Chinese children] playing, the top with five children with hobbyhorses and a standard, the right side with six children playing with a dog, a duck and an umbrella, the left side with four children playing with fans, a butterfly, a standard and a diabolo, the door with five children playing with a cockerel, a hen and a branch of chrysanthemum, the back with three children playing with a standard and a fan, the back of the door with a seated kirin beneath small scattered clouds, the interior of the cabinet with three drawers decorated in gold hiramaki-e, gin-fun and fundame ground with a chequer pattern of gold squares and stylised chrysanthemums, the interior and base of the drawers nashiji , the gilt copper hinges and lock plates chased with floral pattern on a nanako ground 3 1/8 x 4½ x 2¾in. (7.9 x 11.3 x 7.1cm.)
