A LACQUER INCENSE SET IN AN INCENSE CABINET ( KODANSU ) edo period (19th century) Comprising small containers and a tray for use in the incense ceremony enclosed in the interior drawers of the right-hinged cabinet, three of the rectangular drawers of the same size and the fourth, bottom drawer deeper though of the same shape; the top drawer empty, the second drawer holding a removable tray fitted with an inkstone, lacquered on the edges and sides in fundame , and a rectangular, silver mizuire in a silver saucer, and fitted with a rectangular footed tray, the third drawer holding six small, square boxes for incense, and constructed with a long, slender rectangular and a smaller, rectangular well for utensils, the bottom drawer holding a narrow rectangular box and cover for utensils, a cylindrical incense burner ( koro ) lined in gilt-metal and fitted into a rectangular plinth, a two-tier rectangular covered box and a small, rectangular container with canted corners which is lined in red lacquer, a reticulated copper utensil holder cast with chrysanthemums, a paper-pricker with wood shaft, a pair of copper tweezers, a gilded copper incense spatula, a fan-shaped ash shaper and a pair of wood chopsticks; the set decorated en suite in two-colored gold hiramaki-e with random red lacquer and togidashi accents with chrysanthemums of different varieties and maple leaves on a dense nashiji ground, the faces of the drawers and small boxes and containers inside matching, and the nashiji ground and fundame rims repeated, the footed tray decorated with the same chrysanthemum and maple pattern but also with two gold and silver togidashi roundels of plovers flying over salt kilns and the sea and of a stand of chrysanthemums and autumn grasses, each with a black background; the inner side of the door also lacquered in gold, silver, red and black togidashi with two Chinese boys, one distracting a pet with a miniature double-gourd bottle while the other, younger boy points to another small animal as it dashes by, the ground below their feet indicated by okibirame and the sky area roiro with gold clouds of togidashi ; the pulls of the drawers gilt-copper cast in the form of chrysanthemum florets, the lock and side hinges gilt-copper engraved with leaf scroll and the hinged handle and chrysanthemum attachements also gilt-copper, base of the cabinet nashiji and outer edges fundame cabinet 8½ x 6¼ x 6 7/8in.
