(20TH CENTURY), KODA SHUETSU (1881-1933) AND OKADA HYOKAN
A lacquer writing box ( suzuribako ) (20th century), Koda Shuetsu (1881-1933) and Okada Hyokan Square with faceted corners, decorated with a court carriage and torii gate beneath blossoming cherry and pine trees, probably a reference to the Sumiyoshi chapter of The Tale of Genji , elaborately lacquered in gold, silver, brown and red hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, kirikane and with inlaid gold blossoms on the cherry tree, the interior decorated in gold togidashi with stylized bamboo leaf and butterfly patterns on a nashiji ground; fitted with a slate inkstone, silver water dropper in the shape of a fruit with leaves and two brushes 9 5/8 x 8 3/8 x 1¾in. (24.4 x 21.3 x 4.5cm.) With original box titled Goshoguruma maki-e onsuzuribako (gold-lacquered writing box with court carriage), and signed Makieshi Koda Shuetsu and sealed Koda on the underside of the lid, and the interior signed Nushi Hyokan saku and sealed Shissho Okada Hyokan zo in
