CARTIER
CRASH, REF. 2463, CIRCA 1999 Calibre 160, 17 jewels, off-white matte dial, stylized Roman numerals, secret signature at VII, two-part case in rose gold, bezel set with 137 brilliant-cut pink diamonds (~2.10cts), screwed case back, pink diamond-set crown, rose gold Cartier deployant clasp, case, dial and movement signed Width 25mm The Cartier Crash was first introduced in late 1967, and then released as a limited edition in 1991. The watch is attributed to be an inspiration from Salvador Dali, the famous surrealistic painter who reached his pinnacle in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Yet the real story about this watch takes place in London during the mid-60’s, when a Vice President from the Cartier, was unfortunately involved in a fatal car crash. A fire engulfed the occupant along with his watch. The intense heat melted and molded a Cartier Bagnoire Alongee watch on his wrist, which is normally shaped like an elongated oval. With the watch melted and mangled, it took on the shape of a surrealistic watch from a Dali painting. Some at Cartier, found this “watch design” actually inspiring, and decided to introduce it as a new design, and as a tribute to their fallen colleague. Thus the “Crash” watch was born. The ladies diamond dress watch with the pave-set diamond bezel is part of the later series. The rose gold version being the most unique because it’s set with rare matched rose colored diamonds. They call this series a “Limited Execution”.
