A LARGE FAHUA JAR, GUAN MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY The jar is decorated on one side with two immortals greeting Shoulao, who is shown seated under a pine tree flanked by a deer and an incense stand supporting a censer. The reverse is decorated with a scene of four scholars at various pursuits amidst large pine trees, clouds and lingzhi . The shoulder is decorated with ruyi panels containing Buddhist emblems below a border of clouds, and there is a lappet border above the foot. The decoration is outlined in raised slip and picked out in pale aubergine, cream and dark blue glazes, all on a turquoise ground. The interior is covered with green glaze. 12 ½ in. (31.8 cm.) diam. Provenance Mrs. Grace Brown Palmer (1882-1966) Collection. The Art Institute of Chicago, accessioned in 1967.
