The coat of arms symbolises the alliance between two parties. The left part, the dexter arms, are those of Cardinal Scipione Borghese. The right side is possibly referring to the Caffarelli family, although a number of reasons do exist to shed doubt on this. Given the Borghese link with Rome, another possible production center would have been Rome or Viterbo. Many thanks to prof. Brody for his kind assistance in this matter. Condition: A crack going down from the top rim, just left of the tip from viewer's perspective, running down for about two third of the jug, where it extends into a two-way split, one running to the left for about 8 cm, the other running to the right and downwards all the way towards the back of the jug. Furthermore, important crazing/glaze crackling beginning under the handle and extending towards the right, consisting of various lines of irregular shape, surrounded by 3 areas of glaze loss, the first one filled with plaster but not going through. Another area of filled in glaze loss on the left of the armorial cartouche. Various smaller typical age-related areas of worn glaze and minor chips. Signs of restoration on the inside. The crack reinforced with glue on the interior, but not broken as opposed to previously stated report. H: 41 cm.
