A LOUIS XVI ENAMELLED GOLD SNUFF-BOX BY NICOLAS MARGUERIT (FL. 1763-1790), MARKED, PARIS, 1781-82, WITH THE FIRST CHARGE AND DISCHARGE MARKS OF HENRY CLAVEL 1780-82 AND THE COUNTER-MARK OF HENRY CLAVEL 1782-89 oblong box ( boîte en baignore , 'bathtub box'), the panels on cover, base and sides enamelled on an engine-turned reeded ground scattered with pellets in translucent royal blue decorated with scrolling foliage and beaded swags in gold and green paillons , within gold border and outer band of blue enamel with twisted rope paillons , the cover centred with an oblong reserve depicting putti painted en grisaille , the side panels divided by reserves of baskets of flowers with enamelled berries, petals and leaves, on a plinth decorated with translucent green enamelled foliage 3 11/16 in. (94 mm.) wide
