A LOUIS XVI ORMOLU-MOUNTED TULIPWOOD, AMARANTH AND BOIS SATINE DEMI-LUNE COMMODE BY ANDRE-LOUIS GILBERT, CIRCA 1780-85 The D-shaped Rouge griotte marble top above a pair of frieze drawers with foliate and trellis banding centred by flowerheads, above two long drawers with a stiff-leaf and rope-twist surround, above a shaped apron with scrolled foliate clasp, flanked to each side by a conformingly-decorated cupboard door enclosing a pair of shelves, the angles headed by ribbon-tied trophies emblematic of the Applied Sciences, on turned tapering legs with toupie feet, stamped twice 'A.L. GILBERT' and 'JME', the escutcheons 19th century 35½ in. (90 cm.) high; 62 in. (158 cm.) wide; 25½ in. (65 cm.) deep
