A magnificent and Large 'Sancai'-glazed pottery figure of a Bactrian camel and foreign rider Early Tang dynasty the powerfully modeled camel in mid-stride, its tall hair-lined neck reared back, the head raised and mouth open as if braying, displaying its teeth and prominent tongue, the straw-glazed body surmounted by a brilliant green, chestnut and straw-glazed saddle cloth with impressed circular marks along the border, suggestive of leather, outlined with a pleated scalloped fringe, the thick glaze running down the muscular legs, a foreign rider, possibly from Sogdiana, seated between the humps, his legs bent to secure his position, dressed in a long chestnut-glazed robe with green lapels, his left arm akimbo, the right hand clutched and raised at shoulder level as if holding reins, with unglazed exaggerated features and peaked hat, all on a trapezoidal-shaped base height 32 1/2 in., 82.6 cm; length 25 1/2 in., 64.8 cm
