A MAGNIFICENT AND VERY RARE CARVED RED LACQUER BARREL-SHAPED JAR AND COVER XUANDE GILT-FILLED SIX-CHARACTER MARK, MING DYNASTY, 15TH CENTURY The deep rounded sides finely carved through the layers of red lacquer to an ochre ground with four fierce, winged, three-clawed dragons shown leaping wildly against a background of froth-capped, roiling waves and clouds, two with heads turned backwards to confront the dragons behind and all with jaws open in ferocious challenge, between bands of key fret at the rims, the sunken center of the cover with a similar dragon leaping against a ground of wind-tossed waves, below a band of lingzhi scroll, the outer edge also with a key-fret band, the pupils of the dragons in black lacquer, the base lacquered black and the interior of the box and cover in brownish lacquer 8½ in.
