Beschreibung:

A mahogany four post bed, circa 1780 and later, 223cm high, 146cm wide, 202cm long, together with a quantity of matching hangings (please refer to all online images for visual reference) Provenance: Property from a Private Collection, Herefordshire Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use. Old chips and splits. Some small losses. There is an upholstered bed base (filled with horse hair) but no mattress as such. The sacking type material covering the underside of the base is torn in areas throughout. This is likely 20th century in date. The fabric elements are in fair condition but with some fraying in areas and some other faults. The visible timber elements of the frame (headboard end) have various surface abrasions, wear and some small nail holes likely from previous fixture of fabric. There are some marks and small nails or nail holes to other parts of the bed for the same reason. The uppermost parts of the uprights of the same end have neatly spliced in elements (see images) . Apart from the spliced in elements at the top of the posts, the timber frame of the head end of the bed appears to be of the period. The carved and turned posts are of George III period and very good examples of their type, they bear some wear and fading but retain good colour and patina. The iron side rails of the bed and the fixtures for them (connected to each end part of the bed) are later and likely 20th century in date. The mahogany stretcher between the two carved and turned posts is also later and probably 20th century. The cornice/ pediment is likely also of 20th century construction. The frieze incorporates well figured mahogany and the pediment is made faithfully to the period style. Later curtain rail elements and metal hooks have been screwed or nailed to the frame to accomadate the curtains/ hangings. In regard to any hangings/ matching textile elements not shown in the printed catalogue image, these are all displayed on the bed int he second image for this bed on our website.
