A Malaya Emergency M.M. group of five awarded to Sergeant Gundabahadur Rai, 10th Gurkha Rifles MILITARY MEDAL, E.II.R., 1st issue (21141433 A/Cpl., 10th G.R.); WAR MEDAL; GENERAL SERVICE 1918-62, 1 clasp, Malaya, G.VI.R. (Rfn., 10 G.R.); REGULAR ARMY L.S. & G.C., E.lI.R., 2nd issue (Sgt., M.M. 10 G.R.); INDIAN INDEPENDENCE 1947 (21141433 Rfn. Gundabahadur Limbu, G.R.) note mistake in name on this; together with the group of three to his brother Rifleman Narbahadur Rai, 10th Gurkha Rifles comprising: WAR MEDAL; GENERAL SERVICE 1918-62, 1 clasp, Malaya, G.VI.R. (21141431 Rfn., 10 G.R.); INDIAN INDEPENDENCE 1947 (Rfn., G.R.) contact marks, therefore nearly very fine or better (8) Footnote M.M., London Gazette, 30 October, 1956. This is one of relatively few awards for Malaya to be published with a citation, and one of 34 M.Ms to the regiment (only 4 with published citations). The citation that follows is a slightly longer version than that published, and is taken from 10 G.R. records: 'For seven years Cpl Gundabahadur has been on continual operations against the terrorists. He has been an outstanding section commander and acting platoon Sergeant during this period. He has built up for himself an imposing reputation for courage, leadership and gallantry in contact with the enemy. His drive, command and personal example have always brought out the very best in the men under his command. In October 1949 in the Jasin area of Malacca he led a four man patrol on a recce. They were fired on by a CT who was a sentry of a CT camp with 35 persons in it. Cpl Gundabahadur charged the camp with his four men against the heavy fire from other terrorists. He forced his way into the camp and the enemy withdrew leaving behind their equipment. He followed up the retreating enemy and after half an hour he personally killed an enemy rearguard. He continued the following up all that day and into the next day, tracking the enemy all the time. Suddenly they were ambushed. The enemy opened heavy fire on them. The patrol went to cover. Cpl Gundabahadur saw a CT, crawled to a good fire position and shot him. He then led his patrol in a charge at the enemy position and they fled. He continued to follow up the enemy tracks. Four hours later they caught up with the enemy and again charged them. The enemy again fired at the patrol but undaunted Cpl Gundabahadur led his men forward and personally killed another CT. This example is one of many fine actions in which this NCO has been engaged. His devotion to duty, drive and courage have always been an example of the highest order to those under him. He has personally killed six terrorists.’ The M.M. was presented to Gundabahadur by His Excellency the Governor of Hong Kong on 25 April 1957.
