A MARY I SILVER-GILT MOUNTED RHENISH SALT-GLAZED 'TIGERWARE' JUG THE MOUNTS LONDON, 1556, MAKER'S MARK A FLEUR-DE-LYS, THE STONEWARE PROBABLY FRECHEN Of globular form with short cylindrical neck and loop handle, covered in a lustrous mottled brown glaze, the hinged mounts engraved with stylised strapwork with the conjoined initials ' ME' , the domed cover similarly engraved and with a central medallion engraved with the initials ' I.T/ME' , and with cast poppy and dolphin thumbpiece, the handle encased in silver-gilt with a spade-shaped terminal engraved with similar foliate strapwork and edged in zig-zag ornament, the foot with foliage, ovolo and X-ornament, one cast poppy head lacking to thumbpiece, marked on cover only 7¾ in. (19.5 cm.) high overall
