(Asian Art | Live Online, 18th November 2020) A MASSIVE CHINESE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL VASE. A MASSIVE CHINESE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL VASE. Qing Dynasty. The rounded body sweeping from a spreading foot to a tall cylindrical neck rising to an everted overhanging foliate rim bound by ruyi heads with flower heads and scrolling patterns, the body decorated with elaborate lotus heads and roses borne on scrolling foliage, with bats caught in flight, above a band of lappets and further scrolling foliage to the foot, the neck on each side with a chime hanging from a string suspended from the mouth of a bat beset with cash coins, peaches and two fish, flanked by two bronze dragon handles modelled with arched bodies, the head turned back, together with a wood stand, 93cm H. (2) Provenance: Spanish private collection of an Ambassador to China in the first half of the 20th Century. 清 銅胎掐絲琺瑯纏枝蓮紋雙龍耳大瓶連木座 來源:西班牙外交官私人收藏,於20世紀上半葉。 The present vase is one of a small and extremely rare group of massive Imperial cloisonné enamel vases from the late Qing period. The Palace Museum has published a small number, of which only one, at 107cm, is taller than the present vase, see Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum, Enamels, volume IV, 2011, cat no 191. Another pair of vases with closely related handles of 172.5cm in height was gifted by the Emperor of China, Puyi, to King George V on the occasion of his coronation and remains in the collection of her Majesty the Queen, see Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of her Majesty the Queen, 2016, cat no 2127-2130.
