A MASSIVE VICTORIAN SCOTTISH SILVER-GILT CASKET
MARK OF JAMES AITCHISON, GLASGOW, 1888
A MASSIVE VICTORIAN SCOTTISH SILVER-GILT CASKET, MARK OF JAMES AITCHISON, GLASGOW, 1888, Rectangular with batswing fluted borders, sides & cover chased with profuse scrolling foliage, the cover with four circular panels emblematic of a gentleman's leisure pursuits, vis. a horse's head, a hound's head, a brace of pheasants & fishing trophies, centred by a torse encircled with two motto scrolls for the family of Jardin or Jardine , the sides continuing the theme with two large oval reserves chased with fox-hunting scenes, the front with vacant reserve & the back depicting a typical Scottish stately home, raised on four partially pierced, scroll-embellished bracket feet, now lined with cedar wood for use as a cigar box, 17 in. long (43 cm.) x 14 in. wide (36 cm.) x 5 in. high (13 cm.), gross weight 187 oz.
