A MEISSEN BEAKER AND COVER (DECKELBECHER) CIRCA 1728, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS MARK, GILDER'S H. MARK TO BOTH PIECES The beaker of flared cylindrical form, the lower part moulded with a band of stiff acanthus leaves heightened in gilding and divided by gilt scrolls, the upper part painted on one side with a scene of ladies and gentleman on a terrace above a quayside, the other side with an encampment of soldiers, including figures climbing a tree to look down on a battle scene in the valley below, within quatrefoil cartouches edged with gilt scrolls and enclosing Böttger -lustre panels issuing purple, iron-red and gilt scrolls to form two smaller shaped panels above tasselled drapery, each enclosing vignettes of Oriental figures and surmounted by a mask and trelliswork panels, below a gilt Laub-und-Bandelwerk border, the domed cover with a roundel of two estuary scenes flanking the double-knop gilt finial, within a band of similar radiating moulded acanthus leaf ornament issuing iron-red, purple and gilt scrolls, gilt rims (the beaker with rim section broken and restored, and cracked, minute chip to footrim, slight wear to gilding) 6 3/8 in. (16.2 cm.) high
