"A MEMBER OF THE MARY-LE-BONE CLUB"
"A MEMBER OF THE MARY-LE-BONE CLUB" The Cricketer's Guide: containing Complete Instructions to Persons of All Ages London: Dean and Munday, [1840]. 16mo., 8 wood-engravings, diagram (some creasing of corners), original green pictorial wrappers (spine worn, small section cut from front cover to reveal signature on title-page). Provenance : Mrs Say (signature on title). Second edition, following the first of c. 1836. ESPECIALLY RARE IN WRAPPERS which depict an underarm bowler and give the publication price of sixpence on the front. The back wrapper advertises other "miniature editions uniform with this" ( Toastmaster's Companion , Hoyle's Games , Art of Swimming , etc). The only clue to the author's identity is the fact that he was "A member of the Mary-le-Bone Club", then just half a century old. Although the first edition contained a frontispiece, Padwick does not call for one in the second. Allen 31; Padwick 387.
