MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH CENTURY), SIGNED DAI NIHON ICCHOSAI SEIJU HORU AND SEALED HASEGAWA IN AND SEIJU
A mixed-metal-inlaid iron box titled Shichiken Bugaku no zu (The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove performing and dancing) on lid Meiji period (late 19th century), signed Dai Nihon Icchosai Seiju horu and sealed Hasegawa in and Seiju The box rectangular, the slightly domed lid chiseled and inlaid in gold, silver, shakudo and copper with the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove and a boy attendant playing musical instruments and dancing, each sage identified by a name tablet inlaid in gold or silver, the rocks chiseled to resemble the rough texture of natural stone, the sides inlaid in gold and silver with the ginger-leaf ( aoi ) crests of the Tokugawa family and repeated scrolling vines; signature on lid 8 5/8 x 12¼ x 5in. (21.9 x 31.1 x 12.7cm.)
