A most unusual 19th-Century French medical battery apparatus, inscribed Pile Médicale à courant continu [medical battery with continuous current] A. Gaiffe G. Gaiffe fils succ r 40 Rue St André des Arts Paris comprising a wooden board with numerous numbered brass contacts fixed to the upper side, connected on the underside to twenty-four zinc batteries with glass jars, a central rod arranged so that the batteries can be raised or lowered, the board also with a brass sliding scale to connect any number of the batteries up to the full twenty-four, contained in an ebonised wooden box, one edge stamped 107465, the interior of the lid with an applied label inscribed in ink A charger avec Eau 1.000gr à laquelle on ajoute: Bisulfate Hg: 150gr SOH2 pur: 90gr , the box with four brass hooks and eyes, carrying handle and label for Gaiffe & Son -- 12¼in.
