EDO PERIOD (17TH CENTURY)
A Mother-of-Pearl-Inlaid Lacquer Standing Screen ( Tsuitate ) Edo period (17th century) Composed of a square panel mounted in a frame supported by rolled, step feet, one side of the panel decorated with two herons wading in a lotus pond, the birds silver lacquer with a mirror finish, the lotus red and silver lacquer or inlaid mother-of-pearl and gold lacquer and the rippling water gold hiramaki-e , all reserved on a black lacquer ground, the opposite side inlaid in mother-of-pearl with a stand of orchids issuing from hollow rock, the edges of the screen further inlaid in mother-of-pearl with scrolling foliage and zig-zag chevrons and the edges accented by red lacquer 22¾in. (57.7cm.) high; 22 3/8in. (56.7cm.) wide
