(4to) 27x21.5 cm (10¾x8½"), period full calf. Second edition of the Arrowsmith and Lewis Atlas, with the maps from the same plates as the first edition. These include the significant Louisiana (Wheat 259), British Possessions in America (Wheat 260), Spanish Dominions in North America (Wheat 261) and North America (Wheat 262) - about which Wheat says collectively "When considered together the four afford a remarkably clear epitome of the knowledge of the West at the moment when Meriwhether Lewis and William Clark were poised for the take-off of their history-making expedition." Large and elegant contemporary ink ownership signature of Silas Walsworth on front endpaper verso facing the title-page, with ink note on its recto "This was the text book wh[ich] my father used when a boy in his geographical studies & was given by him to me in the year 1842. Edward B. Walsworth." The date 1810 is inkstamped below this latter inscription, evidently by Edward's father. Provenance: John Howell-Books, 5/72 Reference: P-LG 708.
