A pair of Chelsea groups emblematic of 'The Four Quarters of the Globe' Circa 1756 Each group modelled as two scantily-draped putti playing together and emblematic of the Continents, the first group with Europe and America, Europe wearing a crown, an orb in her left hand, a flowered robe about her loins, a helmet, book and music score at the base of the plinth on which she sits, America modelled wearing a feathered headdress and feathered kilt, a quiver over his shoulder, seated astride a crocodile, the second group modelled as Asia and Africa, Asia seated on a plinth with a garland of fruit and flowers in her hair, a robe about her loins, Africa with an elephant's-head headdress, wearing a coral-branch necklace and with a robe about his loins, a sceptre in one hand and seated on a lion, both groups on rocky-mound and rococo-scroll bases applied with flowers and foliage and enriched in colours and gilding (some damages and restorations) The first 9 5/8 in. (24.5 cm.) high, the second 8 7/8 in. (22.5 cm.) high (2)
