A PAIR OF INLAID IRON VASES meiji period (late 19th century), signed ishinsai hirayama yoshitoshi and with kao Each baluster vase cast with four tapered panels of plants and animals, different on each vase, above identical bands of engraved lotus scroll, around each splayed foot and with shaped reserves of dragon scroll in high relief at the neck, the two large panels of one vase cast and inlaid with a wasp, bamboo, grasshopper and millet or with two wasps, a nest, a bird and peonies and the two side panels bamboo and peonies; the two large panels of the other vase cast and inlaid with a heron, crab and lotus or with a swallow, frog and lotus and with side panels of lotus, bamboo and budding branches, the inlays soft-metal and many of the inlaid and cast details gilt, signed on the bases in inlaid engraved cartouches 9 5/8in.
