A PAIR OF SEVRES PORCELAIN BLEU NOUVEAU TWO-HANDLED VASES AND COVERS CIRCA 1774, BLUE INTERLACED L'S MARK, BLUE GILDERS MARK FOR LE GUAY Each vase egg-shaped, the slightly domed cover with gilt pinecone finial centering alternate radiating single acanthus leaves or pendent bellflowers enriched in gilt on a dark blue ground, the body with upright bracket handles issuing from female mask terminals and terminating in acanthus extending towards the center of each side, gilt swags suspended from the mask terminals and handle terminals, each centering a biscuit portrait medallion of either Marie-Antoinette or Louis XVI within a gilt harebell medallion applied to the dark blue ground, within richly gilt surrounds of either ribbon-tied floral cornucopias or diaper-pattern cartouches and foliate scrolls forming a terrace at each side to support a crowing cockerel emblematic of France, birds in flight above, the lower portion with gilt gadroons alternate with similar inverted harebells, raised on a socle of overlapping acanthus and on a further square base 16¾ in. (42.7 cm.) high (4)
