Beschreibung:

A pair of sleeves from a womanÆs shift, Macedonia, embroidered in red wool with insets of needleweaving in red, white, burgundy, and touches of yellow and green, with a long fringe, possibly from Lazarpoljie, 55cm long including fringe, (EE-64). It was normal throughout most of the Balkans to embroider the sleeves of shifts separately from the garment. See Krsteva ill.25. These sleeves were from the same garment and were given to me in 1992 by two friends who had shared them; a pair of menÆs trouser cuffs from Bosansko Grahovo, W. Bosnia, of bands of fulled wool patchwork and embroidered with squares, with three pompoms, 24.5cm x 34cm at the widest points, (EE-66). See The Folk Art of Bosnia & Hercegovina, p.26; and a green velvet cap from Zara region, Dalmatia, with metal thread embroiderey and sequins, (Emed-4). Worn by Morlak peasants in 1920s. Given by Denise Ranoux. Provenance: From the collection of Sheila Paine
