THE EWER WITH MARK OF ROBERT HENNELL LONDON, 1839, THE BASIN LISBON, CIRCA 1750, WITH UNIDENTIFIED MAKER'S MARK EJS IN SHAPED CARTOUCHE
A PORTUGESE SILVER-GILT BASIN AND VICTORIAN SILVER EWER THE EWER WITH MARK OF ROBERT HENNELL LONDON, 1839, THE BASIN LISBON, CIRCA 1750, WITH UNIDENTIFIED MAKER'S MARK EJS IN SHAPED CARTOUCHE The ewer chased with a band of spiral flutes, part lobed and chased with foliage and trellis work, with a leaf-capped scroll handle; the basin, shaped oval with fluted sides and floral, scroll and shell border, with a central platform to support the ewer, later engraved with an inscription, the border engraved with initials 'AR' below British Royal crown and with 'VAML' cypher with British Royal princess' coronet above, marked on foot and basin border The ewer 15½ in. (39 cm.), the basin 20 in. (51 cm.) wide 69 oz. (2,146 gr.) The inscription reads ' Presented to the Princess Royal at Her Christening, 10 February, 1841 by Her Godmother The Queen Dowager.' The initials are those of Queen Adelaide (1792-1849), widow of King William IV of Great Britain and Ireland (1765-1837) and those of Princess Victoria Adelaide Mary Louisa, The Princess Royal (1840-1901), first child of Queen Victoria of Great Britain and Ireland (1818-1901) and Prince Albert, The Prince Consort (1819-1861).
