A post-War ‘Civil Division’ K.B.E. group of fifteen awarded to Brigadier Sir Iltyd N. Clayton, Royal Artillery, who saw action during both the Great War, the inter-War period, and the Second War in Egypt and Iraq, and latterly served as Political Adviser to the Head of the British Middle East Office, Cairo The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, K.B.E. (Civil) Knight Commander’s 2nd type set of insignia, comprising neck badge, silver-gilt and enamel; Star, silver, silver-gilt, and enamel, with full neck riband, in Garrard, London, case of issue; 1914-15 Star (Capt. I. N. Clayton. R.G.A.); British War and Victory Medals, with unofficial M.I.D. oak leaves (Major I. N. Clayton); General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, Iraq (Capt. I. N. Clayton); 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Jubilee 1935; Coronation 1937; Vatican, Holy See, Order of St. Sylvester, Grand Officer’s set of insignia, by Tanfani and Bertarelli, Rome, comprising neck badge, silver-gilt and enamel, maker’s cartouche to reverse of suspension loop; Star, silver, silver-gilt, and enamel, maker’s cartouche to reverse, with neck riband, in slightly damaged case of issue; Hedjaz, Kingdom, Order of Al Nahda, Fourth Class breast badge, silver, silver-gilt, and enamel, unmarked, with ornate riband bar; Iraq, Kingdom, Active Service Medal, no clasp, bronze, mounted as worn; Vatican, Holy See, Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Cross, bronze, this loose; together with the recipient’s group of thirteen miniature awards, mounted as worn (these differing from the full size group in that the they are lacking the two Vatican awards; the Order of the British Empire is on a Military Division riband and there is no M.I.D. oak leaves on the Victory Medal), light contact marks, generally very fine and better (17) £1,800-£2,200 Footnote K.B.E. (Military) 1 April 1941: ‘Lieutenant-Colonel (Acting Brigadier) Iltyd Nicholl Clayton, O.B.E., Royal Regiment of Artillery In recognition of distinguished services in the Middle East during the period August 1939 to November 1940.’ O.B.E. (Military) 3 June 1927: ‘Major Iltyd Nicholl Clayton, Royal Artillery, Chief Instructor and Staff Officer, Artillery, Iraq Army.’ Sir Iltyd Nicholl Clayton was born on 15 September 1886, the son of Lieutenant-Colonel W. L. N. Clayton, of Sandown, Isle of Wight, and was educated at Lancing College and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery on 25 July 1906 and was promoted Lieutenant on 25 July 1909, and Captain on 30 October 1914. He served during the Great War in the Egyptian theatre of War from 29 November 1915, and subsequently served on the Staff, being seconded to Headquarters on 30 July 1917, with the rank of acting Major, and was appointed a Deputy Assistant Adjutant General on 22 August of that year. For his services on the Staff he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 28 November 1917). He was restored to the Royal Artillery on 31 October 1917, and continued to serve in the Middle East post-War, receiving a second Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 12 January 1920), as well as being awarded the General Service Medal with clasp for Iraq; the Iraq Active Service Medal; and the Fourth Class of the Order of Al Nahda of Hedjaz on 8 March 1920. Clayton remained in Iraq post-War, on secondment to the Iraqi Army, and served as Chief Instructor and Staff Officer to their Artillery, services for which he was created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1927. Returning home, he served as Regimental Lieutenant-Colonel of the Royal Artillery from 1934 to 1938, and retired in 1939.
