(Military) 3 June 1927: ‘Major Iltyd Nicholl Clayton, Royal Artillery, Chief Instructor and Staff Officer, Artillery, Iraq Army.’ Sir Iltyd Nicholl Clayton was born on 15 September 1886, the son of Lieutenant-Colonel W. L. N. Clayton, of Sandown, Isle of Wight, and was educated at Lancing College and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery on 25 July 1906 and was promoted Lieutenant on 25 July 1909, and Captain on 30 October 1914. He served during the Great War in the Egyptian theatre of War from 29 November 1915, and subsequently served on the Staff, being seconded to Headquarters on 30 July 1917, with the rank of acting Major, and was appointed a Deputy Assistant Adjutant General on 22 August of that year. For his services on the Staff he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 28 November 1917). He was restored to the Royal Artillery on 31 October 1917, and continued to serve in the Middle East post-War, receiving a second Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 12 January 1920), as well as being awarded the General Service Medal with clasp for Iraq; the Iraq Active Service Medal; and the Fourth Class of the Order of Al Nahda of Hedjaz on 8 March 1920. Clayton remained in Iraq post-War, on secondment to the Iraqi Army, and served as Chief Instructor and Staff Officer to their Artillery, services for which he was created an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1927. Returning home, he served as Regimental Lieutenant-Colonel of the Royal Artillery from 1934 to 1938, and retired in 1939.
