George Graham London, number 643, circa 1723 The case: Of Phase 3 mid-size type, measuring just 38cms. (15ins.) to the top of the raised foliate tied handle, on an inverted bell top over arched rectangular side apertures (now containing pierced brass fish scale frets), on a shallow plinth base on block feet. The dial: rectangular gilt brass measuring 5 and 3/8ths of an inch wide by 6 and 3/8ths of an inch high, set with an Arabic rise-and-fall regulation to the upper left hand corner (hand replaced) and a strike/silent subsidiary to the upper right hand corner (hand original), over four silver foliate scroll spandrels, the upper two single-screwed, the lower two double-screwed framing the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with outer Arabic five minute numerals, minute band, Roman numerals interspersed with floating lozenge half hour markers and an inner quarter hour track framing the finely matted centre with chamfered mock pendulum aperture and chamfered date aperture, the date dial with pin-hole adjustment, the minute hand original, the hour hand restored (the hexagonal central boss original, the lozenge tip later) The movement: twin gut fusees set between the substantial plates united by seven knopped pillars latched to the frontplate, the latter cut to accept the quarter repeat work (repeat now missing, but original quarter-hour bell intact and in situ), the going train now terminating in a deadbeat escapement with jewelled pallets and steel rod pendulum suspended from the shaped brass rise and fall arm with engraved cocks, the steel rod with French-style suspension but heavy brass lenticular bob, the strike train with rack strike sounding on the bell via a facetted brass-headed hammer, the repeat train now lacking, but still set with a pair of interlinked blued steel levers secured to the backplate by shaped and engraved cocks wihtin an elaborate pattern of flowing foliate scrollwork, centred by a mask over the oval signature cartouche flanked by a pair of prancing heralds, punch numbered along the lower edge 643 38cms (15ins) high.
