A RARE ARCHAIC BRONZE RITUAL WINE VESSEL AND COVER, YOU WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY, CIRCA 1100-771 BC The vessel is elegantly cast with a pear-shaped body decorated with straps and diamond-shaped rivets. Each side of the neck has an animal head protruding from a band of mythical beasts. The domed cover is encircled by a further band of mythical beasts, surmounted by a plain oval finial. The arched handle is detailed with stylised linear designs, terminating with animal heads to either end. The interior of the vessel is cast with an inscription. The metal has a dark brownish-green patina with areas of encrustations. 13 ? in. (35.3 cm.) high with handle
