A RARE CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER 'SCHOLAR IN LANDSCAPE' HEXAFOIL TRAY YUAN/EARLY MING DYNASTY, 14TH CENTURY The hexafoil tray is finely carved through thick layers of cinnabar lacquer with a central medallion of conforming shape depicting the immortal Han Zhongli dressed in loose robes revealing his bare chest and protruding belly, resting leisurely in a pavilion by a lake besides rocky cliffs issuing pine trees, while another immortal Han Xiangzi plays the flute on a raft. The cavetto is carved with peony blossoms and leaves, similarly repeated on the exterior. The underside is covered with darkish brown lacquer. 7 1/2 in. (19.2 cm.) wide, Japanese wood box
