A rare cast iron Parisian street sign with inset enamel sign for Avenue Winston Churchill the post French^ late 19th century^ the sign later the post stamped GHM Sommevoire 340cm.; 134ins high including base rebate The Avenue Winston Churchill^ which intersects the Champs Élysées^ is one of the most iconic Parisian thoroughfares in the 8th Arondissement. It was renamed in 1966 after the British Prime Minister who had died a couple of years earlier. In 1998^ on the same avenue^ a statue of Winston Churchill was inaugurated in the presence of Elizabeth II. The elaborate cast iron frame dating to the late 19th/early 20th century and decorated with the coat of arms of Paris featuring a medieval style ship surmounted by a crown^ are a common sight in central Paris and are inset with an enamelled metal panel bearing the streets name. Provenance: By repute^ removed from a garden in Normandy France where it stood for over 20 years. Most city municipalities^ including London^ have a rolling programme of replacing street signs and it is assumed that this example was removed from its original location during renovation/restoration work.
