A RARE GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK HAND MORTAR with heavy brass two-stage barrel recessed at the breech and with three raised moulded bands and later engraved decoration, flat lock with later border engraving, stamped with a mark, GH above a lion's head (Neue Støckel 2604), and the Nuremberg mark, external wheel with pierced iron cover, sliding pan-cover engraved with a mask, and cock engraved with a monster's head, fruitwood full stock with shaped scrolled butt inlaid with brass wire lines and scrolls enclosing engraved shaped brass plaques and mother-of-pearl oval and circular panels finely engraved with masks, the figure of Venus, standing figures in contemporary costume, and profile busts, swivelling safety-catch opposite the lock, long brass fore-end cap finely engraved with hatched scrolling foliage inhabited by a bird and enclosing a figure of Justice, the butt with long brass back-strap engraved with a design of running hatched foliage, and on the underside with a brass panel engraved with a female symbolic figure, iron trigger-guard, and baluster trigger, circa 1600 18 5/8in.
