A RARE MASSIVE ORANGE-BROWN LACQUER ALTAR TABLE, TIAO'AN 16TH/17TH CENTURY The long, rectangular top with a large panel incised and decorated in red, green, blue and other colors depicting a continuous scene of magpies and crickets alighting on leafy stems, other magpies alighting and feasting on the fruiting, flowering and leafy stems of pomegranate issuing from elaborate gnarled rockwork by a flowering magnolia plant, beside other birds and waterfowl nesting and feeding amidst flowering peony and lotus above which flutters a butterfly, all on an interlocked-T pattern ground within a narrow key-fret band encircled by the lattice-pattern border, each of the two upcurved flanges at the ends with a pair of phoenix amidst dense scrolls, the edge of the top with pairs of confronted dragons separated by lotus heads, the plain apron decorated with lotus heads amidst scrolls and with cloud-collar spandrels, each of the two trestles formed by a pair of square legs joined by a transverse strut below the pierced panel and above the large square panel with four apertures silhouetting an upright ruyi head, the panel decorated on both sides with pairs of confronted phoenix, the humped-shoe foot with a mythical landscape centered with a mountain motif and above the pad feet--36in.
