A RARE PAINTED RED POTTERY FIGURE OF A COURT OFFICIAL TANG DYNASTY Finely and realistically modeled, the figure standing on a shaped rectangular base in an animated pose turning slightly to his left with toes pointed out, his right hand held at his chest with clenched fist and his left held at his hip, also clenched to hold a spear, now missing, dressed in a knee-length tunic with long, billowing sleeves under a wide waistband bound by double cords at the chest and a segmented belt at the hips, his well-modeled face with alert and somewhat fierce expression, with bulging eyes, full, rounded cheeks and red lips parted to reveal white teeth, all below an elaborate officials cap with foliate outline centering a mountain peak just above the forehead, the hem and trim of his garments highlighted in gold, retaining extensive traces of red, green, black and orange pigment over a white slip, some restoration 26 3/4in. (67.8cm.) high
