A RARE PAINTED WOOD FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA
18TH CENTURY
A RARE PAINTED WOOD FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA 18TH CENTURY The slender figure is shown standing in a graceful, dynamic pose on a lotus socle, with right foot set slightly back and heel raised as the bodhisattva turns his head to the right away from the small bird with raised wings that grasps beads in its beak as it perches on top of the long-stemmed lotus held in the figure's hands. The bodhisattva wears a shawl with long ends that drape across the body and over the arms, a dhoti that is folded over at the waist, a necklace with a long pendent strand that falls down the front of the torso to a mask-form medallion below the hips where two strands are attached that loop around the lower body and up the back, and a tall, flower-decorated crown behind which the hair is gathered into a large, looped topknot. There are traces of soft red, pink, yellow and blue pigment remaining. 40½ in. (103 cm.) high, Japanese double wood box, stand
