A Rare Pair of Carved Three-Color Lacquer Boxes and Covers Qianlong The form of each probably based on that of a cong , the circular center of each box finely carved on top with a large chun (Spring) character enclosing a medallion of Shoulao reserved against a band of rays radiating from a basket of babao and flanked above by a pair of dragons and clouds, the rays displaying the red, dark green and ochre colors of the lacquer, all within a narrow band of classic scroll above a chime carved at each corner, the sides of the cover carved with convex panels of different figural scenes flanked by panels of variations on the shou character, the shaped apron of the box carved with a foliate spray flanked by dragon scroll, each box opening to reveal a set of four small square covered boxes, the top of each carved with a different character in red reserved on a green ground, and the sides carved with diaper pattern 93/8in.
