A RARE SET CONSISTING OF A FOUR-CASE INRO, SILVER OJIME AND NETSUKE DEPICTING KACHO-E BY THE KAJIKAWA FAMILY Katalognummer: NE1118-171 Gold lacquer inro, silver ojime and ivory netsuke Japan 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) A four-case gold lacquer inro on a kinji ground with takamaki-e, hiramaki-e and togidashi-e. The shoulder and base are rounded in an appealing manner. Both sides show Kacho-e (bird-and-flower painting) motifs in gold takamaki-e. One side shows a large-headed bird, most likely a parrot, sleeping on a tree trunk, while the other shows a songbird painted in black and blue on a prunus tree in bloom. Particularly appealing is the fine gold nashiji on the interior of the cases. Signed Kajikawa Saku on the bottom. The en suite netsuke and silver ojime echo the kacho-e of the inro. The well-crafted netsuke shows a bird perched on a lotus leaf with a second leaf, containing a himotoshi, upside-down below. INRO HEIGHT 8.6 CM, NETSUKE WIDTH 4.2 CM Condition: The inro in good condition with expected wear and surface scratches. The netsuke in fine condition with a good, used patina. One tiny section of the tail has been reattached. Provenance: British private collection Auction comparison: For a similar inro, unsigned however attributed to the Kajikawa school, see Bonhams, Fine Japanese Works of Art, New York, 16 September 2014, lot 2101.
