A REGENCE BRASS-INLAID EBONY COMMODE EN TOMBEAU Attributed to Noel Gerard The moulded brass-bound bow-fronted rectangular top inlaid with a central oval vignette depicting a hunt in an extensive landscape with a town beyond, within a scrolling foliate arabesque border with foliate tendrils, rosette trellis and acanthus-scrolled pelta surrounded by floral garlands and enriched with birds, squirrels and espagnolette masks, the bombé body similarly inlaid and with two long and three short panelled drawers mounted with running acanthus, sphinxes and scallop-shell escutcheons and with gadrooned flowerhead handles, the central recessed drawer with arched apron and gadrooned C-scrolls, the angles headed by espagnolette-masks hung with pearled and husk-trailed lambrequin collars above scrolling cornucopiae and flowerheads, the bombé sides inlaid with two panels of foliate arabesques, vases of flowers and tendrils, above a waved gadrooned apron and on later splayed feet with acanthus-scrolled sabots, the top distressed and with some 19th Century tortoiseshell replacements, the mounts re-gilt in the 19th Century and the guilloche mounts partially replaced, stamped three times by ROCHETTE acting as a restorer 52½in. (133.5cm.) wide; 33¾in (85.5 cm.) high; 26¼in. (66.5cm.) deep
