A Regency mahogany cutlery or wine stand, circa 1815, in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster, the shaped top incorporating a solid galleried section and spindle galleried section with rounded end, centred by a pierced handle, turned tapering legs, brass caps and casters, 71, high 59cm wide, 35cm deep For a very similar example, but stamped J.W. Hetherington, see Bonhams Fine English Furniture & Works of Art, 19th October 2011, lot 164 Literature: see S.Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, p 248, plate B23, where there Stuart suggests that Hetherington could have at some point been an apprentice or journeyman for Gillows. A cutlery stand of similar design, but with baluster turned rail (as the current example has) is illustrated in the Gillows' Estimate Sketch Book, dated 25 July 1794. This drawing is illustrated in the following book, see Lindsay Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, The Bloomfield Press 1995. Jonathan Hetherington of Kirkgate, Cockermouth, Cumbria is listed as cabinet-maker and joiner for the period 1828-29, see G.Beard & C.Gilbert, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, p 424. A stamped Cutlery stand by Hetherington was sold Bonhams London, 18 November 2009, lot 181.
