A Regency mahogany extending dining table, circa 1815, in the manner of Gillows, incorporating two D-ends, a centre section and two additional leaves, incorporating fitted metal clips, one stamped 'BULLOCK.TONKS & BEDLINGTON PATENT,' on reeded tapering legs, cappings and casters, 72.5cm high, 114cm wide, each D-end section 82.5cm long, the centre section 77.5cm long, small leaf 44cm long, larger leaf 76.5cm long Possible sizes:- Two D-ends only 165 x 114cm Two D-ends plus central section 242.5 x 114cm Two D-ends, centre section and small leaf 286.5 x 114cm Fully extending including both leaves 363 x 114cm For a Regency four pedestal dining table with clips marked with the same makers patent , see Christies Important English Furniture, 7th June 2007, Lot 102, where they state that 'The Birmingham iron-founder and patent hinge manufacturer Edward Bullock is listed in early 1820's Directories. At the same period various addresses are given for Thomas Tonks, George Tonks and Joseph Tonks.' Gillows of Lancaster supplied a virtually identical 'Imperial' dining table to Sir Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall, Skipton, in 1813. The Broughton Hall table follows a design patented by Gillows in 1800, and their bill describes a 'Set of mahogany dining tables on stout twined reeded legs and brass socket casters...' and a '...painted rack lined with green baize to containn the leaves', charged at 50 guineas. The Broughton Hall table is illustrated in Margaret Jourdain, Regency Furniture, 1965, p.65, fig.130. A similar table was supplied by Gillows to William, 2nd Baron Bolton, for Hackwood Park, Hampshire, sold Christie's, Hackwood Park, 20-22 April 1998, lot 161. Provenance: Clive
