DescriptionProperty from a German Private CollectionA Roman Marble Figure of NemesisEastern Mediterranean, circa 2nd century A.D.
standing with the weight on her left leg, wearing sandals, long chiton girdled at the waist, and mantle falling down her back, her head turned slightly to the right and with centrally parted hair bound in a fillet, a seated griffin at her feet, a pair of scales carved in shallow relief in front of the plinth.Total height 99.5 cm.; height from plinth 92 cm.Condition reportRepaired in five main places (across knees, upper thighs, lower abdomen, below breasts, and neck) with substantial amounts of discoloured painted fill along joins, especially at base of neck. Right shoulder repaired. Restored: proper left shoulder, proper right knee, some drapery folds, top of griffin's proper right wing, and underside of proper right side of base in back. Both arms and proper left back corner of base missing, as well as griffin's head, proper left foreleg, and tip of proper left wing. Proper left big toe chipped. Note deep channel carved into top of base in front of goddess's proper right foot. Upper back chiselled flat and fitted with iron clamp set in lead. Head with areas of weathering, abrasions to mouth and hair, chip to nose, and formerly restored hair on nape of neck (now showing rusty pin hole).
