A ROYAL GIFT: A GEORGE III SILVER-GILT CUP AND COVER MARK OF ROBERT GARRARD (I), LONDON, 1816 Vase-shaped, the lower body applied with acanthus leaves and flowers, the upper rim with frieze of scrolling foliage, the side handles formed as entwined serpents centred by the head of Mercury in winged helmet, the pedestal foot with guilloche girdle, fluted cushion and acanthus leaf border, the cover chased with acanthus leaves beneath a raised fluted top with acanthus leaf and bud finial, inscribed to one side To George Victor Agar Ellis from his affectionate Godmother Victoria, 12 April 1831 the opposite side engraved with the arms of HRH Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent and his wife Victoria , daughter of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Saalfeld 15 in. (38 cm.) high 109 oz. (3382 gr.)
