A ROYAL LOUIS XVI ORMOLU-MOUNTED BLUE LEATHER AND GILTWOOD CHEST-ON-STAND DELIVERED BY THE MARCHAND-MERCIER DELAROUE ON THE 18TH DECEMBER 1778 TO THE COMTE D'ARTOIS FOR HIS BED-CHAMBER AT THE CHÂTEAU DE BAGATELLE, THE CHEST STAMPED G.DESTER, THE STAND STAMPED G.IACOB AND CARVED BY THE SCULPTEUR RODE, BOTH THE STAND AND CHEST BRANDED 'G.M.', 'AT' AND 'B' BENEATH A CROWN, THE COFFER RETURNED TO ITS ORIGINAL FORM IN 1990 WITH THE ADDITION OF BLUE LEATHER HAVING FORMERLY BEEN LATER VENEERED WITH TRELLIS PARQUETRY CIRCA 1820-40 The chest covered overall with later gilt-tooled blue maroquin leather and with ribbon-tied moulded edges, all corners decorated with fleur-de-lys within laurel wreaths, the top with the coat-of-arms of the Comte d'Artois within a berried laurel wreath, the front with two drawers and conformingly mounted with the interlaced foliate cypher 'AT', the top drawer with two foliate scrolling hinges, the sides with carrying-handles, the frame of the stand in the form of bound fasces twined with laurels, the legs conformingly decorated and headed by paterae All measurements include the stand: 32½in. (83cm.) high; 48¼in. (122.5cm.) wide; 23½in. (59cm.) deep
