A scarce Ashantee campaign D.C.M. group of three awarded to Sergeant Charles Page, Royal Engineers Distinguished Conduct Medal, V.R. (Serjt. Charles Page, R.E.); Ashantee 1873-74, 1 clasp, Coomassie (7067 Serjt., R.E. 1873-4); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (7067 Sergt., R.E.) contact marks and edge bruising, otherwise generally very fine (3) £6000-8000 Footnote Ex J. B. Hayward & Son, October 1972. D.C.M. awarded for the battle of Amoaful 30-31 January 1874; medal presented by the Queen at Windsor Castle on 16 May 1874, one of 30 D.C.M.s awarded for the Ashantee 1873-74 campaign. The recommendation submitted by J. Browne Deputy Adjutant General, R.E., dated Horse Guards, 17 April 1874, states: ‘7067 Sergeant Page, Charles. Worked unceasingly in charge of large working parties of natives. He was continuously alone and unsupported. At the action at Amoaful he behaved with great gallantry, encouraged the black labourers to advance and was frequently exposed when in charge of road making parties, especially on the afternoon on the 30 January 1874.’ Charles Page was born in the Parish of St Pancras, London, and was a carpenter prior to enlisting into the Royal Engineers at Chatham on 16 November 1861. He served overseas during most of his Army career, in China from August 1863 to October 1869; at the Cape from October 1869 to July 1870; in the Gold Coast from September 1873 until April 1874; and, after a brief visit to England to receive his D.C.M., in China once again from July 1874 until September 1879. Sergeant Page was finally discharged at Chatham on 21 November 1882.
