A set of eight mahogany dining chairs , including two open armchairs, of mid Georgian design, each with an undulating toprail and pierced looped back carved with scrolling foliage and bellflowers above a cross-studded brown leather seat, on cabriole legs headed by C-scrolls and lion masks with hairy paw feet. This set is close in design to the celebrated set of chairs in the salon at Stourhead, attributed to Giles Grendey and recovered at a later date by Chippendale the Younger, although differing in the carved detail of the legs. Compare the set of sixteen chairs sold in these rooms 21st November 1990, Lot 344. (8)
