Beschreibung:

A set of four Victorian mahogany side chairs, in Louis XVI style, circa 1880, after a model by Georges Jacob (1739-1814), possibly by Charles Mellier & Co., the rectangular pierced trellis backs with fluted, turned uprights, the bowed seats upholstered in striped moire fabric, on fluted turned front legs, 89cm high, 59cm wide The Anglo-French firm of Charles Mellier & Co. traded from premises at 60 Margaret Street and Cavendish Square, London. They took over the family business of Monbro after they ceased trading in the 1880s (see C. Payne, 19th Century European Furniture, Woodbridge, 1981, p. 40). Mellier & Co. were amongst the English manufacturers who exhibited at the Paris exhibition in 1878 and in 1904 at the St Louis World's Fair. At the turn of the century they gained a reputation as interior decorators. Two sets of chairs of this pattern, by Georges Jacob are recorded in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle in the King's Closet and King's Dressing Room. Examples of Jacob's furniture were introduced into the Prince of Wales's collection (later George IV 1820-1830) at Carlton House, through the French marchand-mercier, Dominique Daguerre
