(143 x 92 mm). A single column of four lines under the miniature and 15 lines on the obverse, text from the opening of the Office of the Dead, written in an appealing, early bâtarde hand, on vellum. A main arch-topped miniature showing a funeral mass, the interior of the church shown in considerable detail, its wall colored violet and dark-brown, the coffin draped in the same blue and gold fabric as the robes of the officiating priest, nuns in black seen kneeling with their backs towards the viewer and friars in brown, the whole within a fine brushed gold border filled with charming naturalistic plant and bird life with three roundels depicting the burial in the churchyard, a skeleton with a framed sign reading “memento finis” or “remember the end” and Job on his dungheap being comforted by friends. Condition: paint somewhat eroded in the lower right (Job) roundel and in one of the monk’s robes in the funeral scene; of generally fine condition. an impressive illuminated leaf. Unusually for typical Office of the Dead miniatures with its inclusion of roundels in the borders. Additionally, the quality of the painting, wispy details and minute depiction of notes in the open choir book are most remarkable.
